How Do You Know If You Have a Hidden Water Leak?

Some plumbing leaks are obvious. Others can continue for days or weeks without water ever appearing where the pipe has failed.

One of the most useful first checks is your water meter. Turn off taps and water-using appliances and allow toilets and tanks to finish filling. Record the meter reading, avoid using water for a period, then check it again. If the reading has increased despite no intentional water use, there may be a leak somewhere on the property.

Central Coast Council recommends checking the water meter when unexplained water usage occurs, and warns that hidden plumbing leaks can waste thousands of litres of water.

Other signs that may indicate a hidden water leak include:

• an unexplained increase in your water bill

• the water meter moving when everything is turned off

• damp or discoloured walls and ceilings

• bubbling or peeling paint

• wet carpet or flooring near a wall

• mould or persistent musty smells

• reduced water pressure

• hearing running or hissing water

• an unusually warm area of floor

• unexplained wet or unusually green patches in the lawn

• water appearing around concrete, paving or retaining walls

• moisture returning after an area has been dried

One symptom by itself doesn't always identify the source. The next step is working out what type of leak or moisture problem you're actually dealing with.

Is It Really a Plumbing Leak? Start With the Symptoms

Not every unexplained damp patch is caused by a leaking pressurised water pipe. Correctly identifying the type of problem can prevent unnecessary cutting, digging and repairs.

This distinction matters. A CCTV drain camera is excellent for inspecting sewer and stormwater pipes, but it serves a different purpose from detecting a concealed leak in a pressurised water line. Water Leak Detection Without Unnecessary Guesswork

Traditional leak investigation can become expensive when the approach is simply to open walls, lift flooring or excavate areas until the source is found. Professional leak detection takes a more targeted approach, starting with understanding the plumbing system and the symptoms.

Our plumbers may investigate:

• whether water loss is continuous or intermittent

• whether the water meter confirms unexplained usage

• which fixtures or sections of plumbing are affected

• whether the problem involves hot or cold water

• whether moisture changes after rain, shower use or appliance use

• the likely route of concealed pipework

• whether the problem is within a pressurised water line, drainage system or plumbing fixture

Specialist leak-detection equipment can then be used where appropriate to narrow down the source before disruptive access is considered. The goal isn't simply to prove that water is present — it's to determine where it's coming from and what needs to be repaired.

Types of Water Leaks We Investigate

Hidden leaks behind walls. A leaking pipe inside a wall may initially appear as a faint stain, peeling paint, swollen skirting board or persistent damp smell. Because water can travel along timber, masonry and other building materials before becoming visible, the wettest point isn't always directly beside the failed pipe — which is why cutting into the wall based only on the stain's location can sometimes miss the actual source.

Underground water leaks. These can occur in water services running between the meter and the house, or through other buried sections of pipework. Possible signs include unexplained water usage, a meter that keeps moving, soft or boggy ground, one patch of lawn growing faster than the rest, water appearing through cracks or paving, or a loss of water pressure. Before digging, it helps to understand both the likely pipe route and probable leak location — this is where electronic pipe location can be useful.

Leaks under concrete slabs and floors. These can be particularly difficult to diagnose because the pipe itself is inaccessible. A hot-water pipe leak may create a warm section of flooring, while other slab leaks may first show up as unexplained meter movement, dampness, higher bills, or moisture around the edge of a floor. Finding the approximate source before cutting concrete or lifting flooring significantly reduces unnecessary disruption.

Bathroom and shower leaks. These aren't always caused by the water supply pipe — shower fittings, concealed pipework, leaking wastes, bath connections, toilet plumbing, failed seals and waterproofing problems can all be responsible. Hot water pipe leaks. These can increase both water and energy consumption. Signs include a warm floor, unexpectedly high water usage, a hot water system running more often than normal, or moisture around concealed pipe routes — though the fault may sit with the hot water system itself rather than the pipework. These can be harder to trace because pipework often runs through common walls, ceiling spaces or areas serving several occupants, and water can appear in a property below where the leak began. A Moving Water Meter Tells You Something Important, But Not Everything

If all fixtures and appliances are off and the meter keeps recording flow, that's good reason to investigate further. But the meter can't tell you where the water is escaping — it can't distinguish between a leaking pipe underground, a concealed leak inside the building, a toilet quietly running into the bowl, an appliance drawing water, or several smaller leaks happening at once.
